There Once Was A Captain…

There once was a captain who was notorious in his own right, and what was peculiar about this captain was his morning ritual. Like all captains, he had a locked safe – I know what you’re thinking, it was probably full of rubies and gold. Wrong. Well, not this captain, because concealed within the safe was a piece of paper from an envelope. He would read it, fold it back up, enclose it inside the safe and begin his day. He did this everyday for years and naturally, his crew began to get suspicious… their thoughts ran wild with the monstrous sea winds and high with the chaotic tides, what could it be?!

But of course, as nature follows suit, the Captain’s last days were on the horizon and when his final day came, his crew wept with sorrow. And yet… they could not contain their curiosity, intrigued by the paper inside the safe, they had to know why it was so important to the captain. Eventually, when they broke into the safe and looked at the paper it read:

“Starboard Right, Port Left!”

Now, I’m sure many of you reading this will understand the point of the joke but for those who don’t, let me explain. For centuries mariners have used the above nautical terms as a way of steering their ships. The steering oar was placed on the right side of the stern because most sailors were right handed and that’s when they began to refer to the right as ‘starboard,’ which is the literal translation of stéor (meaning "steer") and bord (meaning "the side of a boat"). The left was conveniently referred to as ‘port’ because it was the side of the ship that always faced the port.

So, what does this have to do with anything? Well, when EMCS Industries Ltd acquired the Hydrosonic Hulltender (later rebranded as MARELCO NOXX LFP (low frequency pulse)) – this allowed EMCS to expand. Just like the Captain, Derek Knox who was the inventor of MARLECO NOXX LFP, understood the importance of anti fouling and how it is necessary to keep all hard marine growth away, but also being aware of using environmentally safe solutions.

With our inventions at EMCS, like the MARELCO MGPS (Marine Growth Protection System) that uses copper and aluminium electrolytic anodes to dominate the anti fouling and corrosion of a ships piping system that use sea water. Or better yet, the MARELCO NOXX LFP  which is used to fight off underwater micro-organisms by using electronic emitters in boats, ships and harbours – maybe the captain would have had a longer life because he wasn’t stressed from keeping the mussels off his ship!

All jokes aside, that is why the EMCS boasts one of the leading marine growth protection systems in the world. Our customers have come to rely on the high calibre quality and technology from the MARELCO system because it works exactly like we say it does. It truly does fight the accumulation of sea life from leeching onto marine ships and everybody knows an anti-corrosive and fouled boat equals a safe and prosperous voyage!
